What is SAMAJ ?

SAMAJ is the first academic and peer-reviewed on-line journal devoted to social sciences studies on South Asia. It publishes only research-based articles written by professional academics as well as doctoral students. Its scope is multidisciplinary, covering studies in history, geography, anthropology, sociology, political science and economy.

Academic articles are often restricted to highly specialized reviews rarely known outside a limited circle of people who, in addition, are fortunate enough to visit libraries. SAMAJ seeks to ‘democratize’ research-based studies on South Asia by giving them a greater visibility through a free and worldwide access.

SAMAJ's content

Each issue is dedicated to one specific theme, analyzed through a wide variety of articles. These articles are always preceded by a general introduction presenting the problématique and the current debates discussed in the issue. In addition, SAMAJ includes reviews on the latest and most important books published on South Asia in the disciplines here covered as well as free-subject articles on original topics.

SAMAJ's first issue (edited by Aminah Mohammad-Arif and Christine Moliner), due in October 2007, is about inter-communal relations amongst South Asian diasporas, with articles by Laurent Gayer (CSH), Miniya Chatterji (IEP/CERI), Christine Moliner (EHESS), Aminah Mohammad-Arif (CNRS/CEIAS) and Ingrid Therwath (IEP/CERI). SAMAJ’s second issue, coordinated by Amélie Blom (GRASP/CERI) and Nicolas Jaoul (CEIAS), is due in Spring 2008 and will deal with the mobilization of ‘offended communities’ in South Asia (see the ‘call for papers’ on the home page of the website). The free-subjects section currently includes three articles: one regarding Kabul during wartime (Gilles Dorronsoro, Sorbonne University), the second one concerning the Pashtuns of Balochistan (Luc Bellon, EHESS), and the final one relating to military factions and civil-military relations in Bangladesh (Jérémie Codron, CERI).
